Facts about West Nile Virus in San Diego, excerpted from the San Diego Reader
- In 2008: 23 cases of West Nile Virus
- Four horses in the county are dead from the disease.
- Of the 40 “sentinel chickens” used for early detection, 13 have converted to West Nile, including all 10 in Los Peñasquitos Lagoon, 2 in Oceanside, and 1 in the Tijuana River Valley. In the past, no more than 1 chicken had converted.
- Of the 240 batches of mosquitoes that have been tested by the Department of Environmental Health, 37 are positive for West Nile, a higher percentage than ever before. In fact, we’ve never had more than 7 positive batches of mosquitoes in the past.
